Aomori
Dormy Inn Aomori Natural Hot Spring is set in Aomori, 6 km from Sannai-Maruyama site and 43 km from Tsuta Hot Spring. With a restaurant, the 3-star hotel has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi. Private parking is available on site. Absolutely loved the public bath on the rooftop. It was so refreshing to have part of it outside and an actual ice cold bath. Cute to have the peepholes with shutters so you could look outside while no one could look inside. The inside bath made my skin supersmooth. Nice dry sauna. Cool idea to have shower baskets with shampoo and conditioner for specific hairtypes to choose from. There was also a magnificent massage chair 👌 the extras like ice cream and free ramen were also appreciated. Loved how they decorated it with traditional Aomori Nebuta made by a local famous artist. They had tourist information on their tv which was really helpful. Room was small but everything was there, even space to hang your clothes to dry after washing them for free. Breakfast was abundant and well taken care of with a lot of diversity. Staff were all very helpful and kind. The apple juice was delicious ❤️ This hotel is worth going to Aomori for!
Kuroishi
Situated in Kuroishi in the Aomori region, Tabinoyado Saikawa features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to spa facilities. This 3-star ryokan offers a housekeeping service and private check-in and check-out. Tsuta Hot Spring is 36 km away and Hirosaki Castle is 22 km from the ryokan. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan with public baths (gender separated). Dinner and breakfast are amazing and plentiful, with locally sourced organic produce (even coffee!). Our room (Japanese room with private toilet) was to the left of the entrance. It was very spacious. The heater worked very well as autumn night was a bit damp and cold. The beds are futons on wood bed frames on tatami, and they are super comfortable. As I have a whole-leg tattoo which is usually not permitted in the public baths, I notified Ranko in advance, and she reserved the private bath for us. The private bath was a very beautiful blue ceramic bath filled with warm (I don’t think it’s very hot) healing hot spring water from the area. Ranko’s warm personality really made the stay memorable. Be sure to ask her for recommendations of the areas. She is a well of knowledge of the area!
Zao Onsen
Set in Zao Onsen in the Yamagata region, with Zao Onsen Ski Resort nearby, Takasagoya Ryokan features accommodation with access to a public bath. This 3-star ryokan offers luggage storage space and a housekeeping service. The ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Warmest accommodations I’ve ever received. I loved every aspect of the place - sleeping, living, dining, showering, onsen, accessibility to the slopes. This is a beautiful place! The owners were very nice and they were very forgiving of our mistakes and helped out with our request.
Ashinomaki Onsen, Aizuwakamatsu
Featuring free WiFi and a restaurant, Okawaso offers accommodation in Aizuwakamatsu, 13 km from Aizu Higashiyama Onsen.
Each room at this ryokan is air conditioned and comes with a TV. The rooms include a private bathroom. For your comfort, you will find slippers and a hairdryer.
We wanted to visit the so-called Demon Slayer castle hotel. It’s out of the way so we rented a car rather than take transit. The drive itself was four hours from Tokyo.
From the parking lot staff, to front desk, housekeeping and everyone there… the staff were all amazingly kind and patient. Not everyone speaks English, but there are a few.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and very ryokan style (tatami) and the onsen was super clean. We had Kaiseki dinner and it was quite the experience. Food was delicious at dinner and the buffet lunch was traditionally Japanese. The stand out for us was the AIZU yogurt and AIZU maple syrup made from local chestnut trees.
If anyone at Ookawaso reads this, please accept our thank you. You were all wonderful and we hope to visit from Canada again someday. Thank you for your patience with my eight year old son and our horrible Japanese.
Senboku
7.6 km from Nyuto Hot Spring in Senboku, Aoni Sanso features accommodation with access to a hot spring bath, public bath and open-air bath. There is an in-house restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. The ryokan has family rooms. Nice place, nice onsen, good food! But you need a car to get to it!
Zao Onsen
Featuring a garden and a bar, Petit Resort Hotel Der Barte is located in Zao Onsen. The 3-star guest house features mountain views and is 600 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The guest house has family rooms. Fantastic location, right on Uwanodai slope - actual ski-in ski-out. Host was extremely friendly and helpful, the food in the restaurant was great and good value. Nice draught beer! Shower in room with a shared hot bath that could be booked for free. There's a ski/boot room in the basement that opens onto the slope. The decor is a bit dated but in a very charming way.
Aizuwakamatsu
Tagoto features a hot public bath, Japanese-style and Western rooms and Japanese cuisine, a 5-minute drive from Aizu Wakamatsu Station. It offers free Wi-Fi throughout the propert and free parking is on-site. This is the place where you should go if you would like to eat some amazing Japanese food. It is a traditional ryokan that serves various dishes for dinner and breakfast. I enjoyed spending there 2 nights. The nearby area is full of curios shops and Tsuruga Castle is within 30 minutes on a walk (better to walk following Dr. Noguchi Street, it has a nice vibe) I was traveling by bicycle and they helped me to store it inside.
Zao Onsen
Set 500 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Pension Puutaro offers 3-star accommodation in Zao Onsen and features a garden. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, luggage storage space and bicycle parking, along with free WiFi throughout the property. Excellent service! The staff at Pension Puutaro were incredibly friendly and attentive, going above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Highly recommend for their exceptional hospitality!

The location was great, with an easy access to Sendai train station and the city centre. The staff was friendly, and everything we could have needed was provided (towels, water bottles, vending machine,...)
Great location. Friendly staff Reasonable buffet breakfast for 3 star hotel.
The location is great, just a minute to the station, to the river and a few more minutes into the city center.
The best part of staying in this budget hotel is the exceptional breakfast buffet with a great variety of Japanese homemade dishes. It’s within a 10-min walk from the JR station. The public bath is open until late night.
The bath size was decent for a budget hotel. Staff were very friendly too.
When arriving, the lobby felt so grand and luxurious with seating in the front! The check in process was through a machine but the staff were friendly and available for help when needed. The disposable amenities available were also easy to access and had a great range. The room was also a nice and tidy and the bathroom was the same too. I liked that laundry machines were easily accessible. The location compared to the city centre (especially Sendai Station) was extremely convenient.
Good location, in city center.
Breakfast is excellent: Japanese and ample quantities. Small selection of western food available. Dinners are sensational; a rotation between Sukiyaki, Bbq and Shabu Shabu. All delicious in their own way. Accomodation is 3 star and comfortable enough. There are private and public onsens - the public ones are, perhaps, slightly small. Location to Appi Kogen is perfect - a two minute drive at most, even in foul weather. The tariffs are very reasonable, in stark contrast to 1.3km up the hill, on snow.
Friendly staff, convenient location, clean rooms, and good price. I appreciate that the staff offered to hold on to our bags after check-out. That was very nice and it allowed me to enjoy my Sendai trip without carrying a heavy backpack around all day.
Location of the hotel is about 10 min walk. It is located in the city center. There is a coin laundry machine in the hotel. There was no drinking water supplied to us. However the water from tap is drinkable.
