We were greeted with a spacious tower room apartment with stunning views of the ocean from their cliffside property. The kitchen has been updated in the apartment and generously stocked with tea, coffee (Nescafe), and shortbreads. The local coffee shop on the property is run by the hosts and had a great menu. We were too late to sample the full menu, but the sweets were delicious. We were made to feel at home without the hosts being intrusive at all. Felt like our own little hideaway in a historic castle. Wish we had had more time and better weather to explore the property trails more. They have hundreds of head of sheep (and lambs) and Highland cows on the property, too. Don't trust Google Maps or Apple Maps: the hotel is 300 meters straight from the port; I was on a bike and had to do the mountain grand prix twice (there and back) because the GPS sends you to the other side of the island, to The Colonsay Apartments, even if it is indicated as The Colonsay Hotel. Really liked Portree and the people in the shops/pubs in general were great fun. Just did the shops and the ‘lump’ on our full day there and we were incredibly lucky with the weather. Picturesque fishing town definitely worth a visit. Access from the ferry port is via narrow roads with passing places. Numerous walks especially enjoyed the trail to the lighthouse. Whilst Pennygate Lodge is a lovely guest house we found...
Whilst Pennygate Lodge is a lovely guest house we found Craignure a very drab functional place. We might have been better staying in Tobermory though the available accommodation there was not as good. Two storms approaching from the west starting with torrential rain did not help make our visit to Craignure very pleasant. Close to ferry of course which is a positive. Dunvegan was quite central to travelling across Skye for our various planned activities - whisky tour, puffin tour, walking Quiraing, Fairy Pools and Old Man of Storr. Sconser is quite small but it is central to most of Skye and the Raasay ferry is on your doorstep (lovely walking at the north of the island and up Dun Can, lots of eagles, Brochel Castle, a distillery). The village is set back on a road parallel to the main road and houses look forward to the sea and Raasay and backwards to the mountain Glamaig (great views both ways). The Sconser Lodge Hotel has a cosy bar with open fireplace.
