FAQs about hotels in Normandy
Remembering the Past, Relishing the Present
Bordered by the English Channel, Normandy is a sleepy French region that sees many visitors arrive via its major seaports – Cherbourg, Dieppe, Le Havre and Ouistreham.
Between these last 2 is Deauville, home to some of the most exclusive Normandy hotels by the beach. Its pristine sands and international film festival have secured its prestige for the glitterati. The surrounding region of Calvados is famous for its cider and brandy, and Normandy also home to camembert cheese.
Calvados was also the site of the Allied landings and Booking.com has a great range of B&Bs and hotels near D-Day beaches. Caen, the Normandy capital, is a lovely city that houses the Memorial for Peace, a museum detailing the effects of conflict, and World War II in particular. North of here in Bénouville is Pegasus Bridge, while the D-Day beaches span from Ouistreham to Arromanches, home to another of Normandy’s WWII museums.
Inland is the Bayeux tapestry, a huge, hand-stitched depiction of the Norman conquest of England. Off the region’s western shores are the Channel Islands, while at its south-west corner are Avranches and nearby Mont Saint-Michel, accessed via a causeway.
Other Normandy attractions include Rouen, a historic city with colourful, half-timbered houses and an archaeology museum housing finds from the Roman amphitheatre down the Seine River in Lillebonne.

The old city centre is beautiful.
The old city centre is beautiful. The cathedral and the old churches are, of course, stunning but the modern St Jeanne d'Arc church is a must-see too for an impressive contrast. We also spent most of one day in the fabulous (free) Art Gallery. We walked around the city mainly (walking is the best way to see the beautiful buildings and quaint streets) but there are buses and a metro system for getting around too. The food we had everywhere was great and pretty good value for money.Guest review byElainaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The Abbeys are stunning, the town is flat so easy to walk around. There are regular markets, the Sunday one we went to was quite big with lots of fresh food. The harbour is a nice spot with a line of bars and restaurants nearby, my favourite being an Irish bar (O'Donnells) for a well kept pint (or three) of Guinness!Guest review byRaymondUnited Kingdom - 10.0

A beautiful old harbour town, that was buzzing with life even in the cold and damp. There are so many beautiful houses and buildings and the streets are filled with galleries and handicraft shops. There is some stunning art on display and plenty of places to get original souvenirs. We could have stayed for a week.Guest review byeshchoryIsrael - 8.0

Unfortunately we were only there on a Sunday where all the town facilities were closed by the time we got there. However, there is a huge shopping centre open on a Sunday about a 15 minute walk from the hotel - veery impressiveGuest review byboetie54United Kingdom - 6.0

I was in Deauville for the Bridge Festival, so chose the location for that reason. However, I would say that some of the restaurants in Deauville are not great value or quality and prefer to eat in Trouville where there is better choice and value in my opinion. It is all down to personal taste, obviously many wealthy Parisians and foreign visitors like to be in Deauville, for the beach and top hotels. Relative to Trouville it is quite smart, but Trouville is more lively and overall more interesting. Next time, I will stay in Trouville although it is more of a walk to the casino.Guest review byChrisUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Beautiful town, great location to take a trip to Normandy beaches. The tapestries were moved to the UK and the Tapestry museum closed on Sept 1st for two years! Most restaurants were closed on Sunday and Monday and you definitely need a reservation for dinner if you want a good meal. some restaurants were closed on Tuesday too! If you take a full day tour of Normandy I would suggest staying the night at Bayeux because there is traffic at the end of the day heading back to Paris.Guest review bytoni - 10.0

We arrived in late afternoon at hotel and toured island first in evening hours - great idea as less crowded and still light enough to wander the streets and alleys. Toured the abbey the next morning - around 11. Already getting crowded - should have started earlier. But well organized and flows well within the Abbey. Well worth the visit to see this unique and historic structure - magical.Guest review byPeterUnited States - 10.0

Dieppe has everything for a short break and lots of restaurants to choose from, The market is fantastic and the kite festival was on. Lovely long walk along the prom. The station is just ten minutes walk from the town and the harbour Is very picturesque.Guest review byLyndagUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Lovely, small seaside town.
Lovely, small seaside town. Lots of restaurant choice - our favourite was Le Clos Lupin, typical French, family run restaurant. Great cooking - we also rated Les Bel Amis amongst others. Most, if not all the local restaurants seemed to be family owned and run. No chains.Guest review byHelaineUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Cherbourg is dominated by a huge harbour where your ferry...
Cherbourg is dominated by a huge harbour where your ferry comes in. The town itself is long from east to west, spreading out from the harbour. From north to south it is much smaller. The harbour area and the promenades are worth walking around and the central area at the Place Charles de Gaulle is the best area to relax in. It's also the ideal town from which to see other nearby attractions, such as a D-Day beach, the Bayeux Tapestry and Mont-St-Michel, all of which I visited. One word of warning - the French railway service isn't the best. The trains are subjected to many cancellations and delays and the ticket machines in the stations frequently refuse to give you a ticket! Railway problems aside, the town of Cherbourg and other parts of Normandy are worth a holiday and I'm so glad I went.Guest review byCLIVEUnited Kingdom
