Walk 50 metres (maybe even less) and you are in central tourist Fuzimiao area, plenty of food, shops and people. Very cheap, I spent 316 rmb for 2 nights in a dorm for 4 people. We walked around Jiangnan Gongyuan with our child until 11:30 pm and it only took us a 5-minute walk to get back to the hotel.
