If you can only see one thing, see this, as it's the best introduction to the city. It takes you through the history of the city, using some top flight art works in the process (mediaeval sculptures, paintings by Klimt and the like); that fills 3 floors, the ground floor up to the end of the Middle Ages, the 2nd floor for 20th/21st century and the 1st floor for the period in between. English captions throughout, and a lot of child-friendly exhibits; all in all, it gives a critical but easily accessible reappraisal of the city's history, e.g. questioning who gets memorialised and why, or the role of Viennese under the 3rd Reich. The terrace to the 3rd floor gives you great views over the city centre. The top (4th) floor is for temporary exhibitions, for which there is a charge, but the rest of the museum is FREE!

This museum was fantastic, very child friendly with lots of interactive stuff. Loads of places to sit and take your time to read. Excellent air conditioning, great on a hot day. Set out in a really interesting way. Has a lovely cafe with a viewing area.
