Practice Aloha. When driving the road to Hana, watch for cars behind you and please pull to the side, when safe, to let them pass. Be aware that many locals commute to work or drive to the other side for appointments. Do not climb over or stand on guardrails for photo sessions. Those safety barriers are there for a reason. “No Parking” signs are posted along the route and there are hefty fines for ignoring them. Be mindful of private property signs. Many of the waterfalls and ponds are on private property, so please be respectful and stay out of these areas…regardless of what your travel guide or app tells you. Visit the black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park, Haleakala National Park at Kipahulu with Pools at ‘Ohe’o Gulch and the Pipiwai Trail through a bamboo forest, Hana Bay, Koki Beach, Hamoa Beach, Kahanu National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Hana Lava Tube, Hana Cultural Center and Museum, and more. By the way, never go into a pond when it is raining. If the water looks brown or is moving swiftly, this is an indication that flash flooding is likely. Hana, isolated from the rest of the island, is truly the last undeveloped tropical paradise on Maui. The charm of Hana is the fact that little has changed over the last 30 years. Untouched by the major developments of the other side of the island, the Hana community has managed to perpetuate a small town atmosphere, embracing the Hawaiian culture, and the island's scenic natural beauty.
