Description Retreat to luxury in a quiet rural setting Self check-in key safe. Nestled within a beautiful, private garden with harbour views across to mountains. Well situated for business and sporting events in town, but with immediate access to Peninsula walkways, cycleways, beaches, wildlife. Located at Pukehiki, on Otago Peninsula ridge, near Larnach Castle. We are 15 minutes’ drive from central Dunedin. Great views of sunrises, sunsets, night sky and near-by vantage points for Aurora Australis. Close to the historic, pretty Pukehiki Community Church, Hall and a Lilliput Library. Cafes and restaurants within 12 minutes’ drive. From here, it’s easy to explore the Peninsula or just relax within our peaceful, large garden. Private, single level entrance. One bedroom with Californian King/Twin sleeping arrangement, wardrobe, ensuite with level access shower, toilet and vanity with hairdryer and straighteners. Kitchenette with microwave, fridge, tea/coffee making plus glasses, crockery, cutlery, dining table. Lounge space with a fold-down couch. Private patio with views across harbour to Mt Cargill. Louisa is an anatomist and fine artist. Most days she is in her studio space at The Haven, painting and sculpting. She also teaches and lectures drawing and sculpting. Hugh was a harbour pilot for many years, and before that, captain of sailing ships – hence the nautical elements in the design and decoration of the house. Hugh is also a historian, lecturer, broadcaster and author. Between them they have seven adult children, all independent now. They love living here and are keen to ensure you have a wonderful experience staying at The Haven.
This is a great base from which to explore the Peninsula. Cyclists can circuit Dunedin Harbour which includes riding the Port to Port boat from Portobello to Port Chalmers. Tourist attractions include Larnach Castle, Port to Port Cruises, Albatross Centre, OPERA, Elm Wildlife Tours, Natures Wonders. Self-explore wild beaches such as The Pyramids, Allens, Sandfly Bay, Smail’s and Tomahawk. Keep a respectful distance from the wild seals, sea lions, penguins! Walking tracks include Harbour Cone (Hereweka), Smith-Larnach to Hoopers Inlet, Okia reserve, Lover’s Leap Loop, Ridge Road, Greenacres, Camp Road Highcliff, Paradise, Braidwood, Buskin, Karetai, the Soldier’s Monument. MacAndrew and Broad Bay beaches are safe for family picnics and bathing. Dunedin attractions include St Clair beach with cafes and the hot salt water pool (in Summer) as well as museums, galleries, historic buildings, University, shops, cafes, restaurants, performance venues. Dunedin has some of the finest surfing in the country. There are Peninsula cafes and restaurants at MacAndrew Bay, Glenfalloch Gardens and Portobello, as well as at Larnach castle, Albatross Centre and other tourist hubs.
