Neighbourhood information

A mixed site, both natural and cultural, with an area of ​​74,000 hectares. The Wadi Rum region is located in southern Jordan near the Jordanian-Saudi border. It is a desert with diverse terrain that includes a group of narrow valleys, natural arches, towering cliffs and steep roads, as well as large piles of collapsed rocks and a number of caves. The inscriptions and drawings on the rocks and archaeological remains found at the site bear witness to the human settlements that the Wadi Rum region has known and the interaction between man and the natural environment over a period of 12,000 years. 25,000 rock sculptures and 20,000 rock inscriptions were found at the site, bearing witness to the development of human thought and the early stages of the development of the alphabet. This site embodies the development of agriculture, farming and urban life in the region.
