The ancient town of Petworth dates back to medieval times, with the Market Square known to have been a market place since at least 1541. The age and history of the town is evident everywhere you look and this is reflected in the selection of quality antique shops around the town. These are complimented by many interesting shops, cafes and restaurants. Possibly Petworth's most famous attraction is the National Trust Petworth House. Set within a 700 acre park, this 17th century mansion housing an impressive collection of works by artisits including Van Dyck, Turner and Reynolds. Beyond Petworth, the surrounding area offers a wealth beautiful walks in and around the South Downs National Park. Goodwood lies just a few miles to the south and attracts visitors from all over the world to its famous motor sports and horse racing events. Chichester lies about 14 miles south of Petworth and has a world famous cathedral which dominates the city skyline. It also has the renowned Festival Theatre where some of the world's most famous actors perform. The south coast, with many picturesque beaches including West Wittering's sandy dunes, is also within easy reach. Other local attraction include the Goodwood Estate, known around the world for both its horse racing and the Glorious Goodwood week, as well as its motor racing events that include the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival
