This house was much bigger than the photos and is so beautiful. There were so many nick nacks and artwork to look at everywhere and for an old house the furnishings and plumbing were very modern and it was so comfortable.

Fascinating house and lovely garden - felt like a small stately home but also very comfortable and welcoming. Close to wonderful wildlife sites including Dungeness and Rye Harbour.

The Captain's House, also known as Skinner House, is a Grade II listed 17th-century property with original features, including early 1700s Trompe l’Oeil decoration in the hall, staircase, and one of the bedrooms. The entrance hall leads to a bright sitting room with a wood burner and a panelled dining room featuring a decorative fireplace. At the rear is a second sitting room with an inglenook fireplace, wood burner, and a conservatory overlooking the garden. There is also a downstairs toilet. The kitchen, equipped with a gas oven, hob, dishwasher, and modern conveniences, opens onto a sunny patio with outdoor seating for alfresco dining. The beautifully landscaped garden includes roses, an orchard, and quiet spots for relaxation. Upstairs, the first floor has a cozy double bedroom overlooking the garden, a bathroom with a roll-top bath and shower, and a second kitchen used as a utility room. The second floor has two spacious bedrooms: one with mahogany wardrobes, an antique double bed and a single bed, and another with a double bed and en-suite bathroom. The top floor includes a bathroom with a roll-top bath and a large attic bedroom with an extra single bed.

The Captain’s House is perfectly situated for exploring the stunning coastline and Romney Marsh. Enjoy fresh fish from nearby Dungeness shops like local sea bream, cooked with herbs and butter, paired with samphire. Rye’s cobbled streets, quirky cafes, and antique shops are a must-see... Visit Dungeness for its famous shingle beach, Derek Jarman’s iconic Prospect Cottage, and the RSPB nature reserve. Try fish wraps at The Snack Shack or classic fish & chips at The Pilot Inn. Kids will love the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, offering a nostalgic miniature steam train experience. For sandy beaches, visit Camber Sands, Greatstone, or Littlestone-on-Sea. Explore local treasures like the ‘Cathedral of the Marsh’ All Saints Church in Lydd, or enjoy coastal walks and cycling. The nearby towns of Hythe, Hastings, and Folkestone offer history, art galleries, and independent shops. Whether relaxing or adventuring, this area offers something special for everyone.
