Prior to our purchasing the Pen-y-Bont Hotel it was destined to be converted into private housing, which would have removed this iconic location from the public domain forever. We have built up, room by room, a total of five letting rooms so far, and hope to extend that to six or seven in 2016. These are in the main building on the B4405, overlooking the church and mountainside. TV's in every room is a new feature for 2016. We also have WiFi throughout the building, though many guests like to escape the modern age completely! The Hotel features a 16th Century Restaurant and Bar with log fires, a fine sight on a Winter evening. Our Beer Garden gives breathtaking views, positioned as it is along the South Western shore of Llyn Mwyngil (Talyllyn Lake.) It is less than 10 miles to the beach at Tywyn, and other expanses of sand nearby at Aberdovey, Fairbourne and Barmouth. We are at the foot of Cadair Idris which attracts walkers from all over the world. On the other side of the mountain is Dolgellau, an attractive small town and a centre locally for outdoor activities. To the south we have the beautiful market town of Machynlleth.
Angela and Brian met here at the Bar in June 2005. After singing on Royal Caribbean Cruise Liners Angela was staying at her parent's holiday chalet in nearby Bryn Crug and working Part Time behind the bar at the Pen-y-Bont Hotel. She had been coming to the area regularly all of her life. Meanwhile Brian was Head of Biology in a Bristol Secondary School. His Mother was given just months to live so he took her on holiday while she could still enjoy the experience (thankfully she was a Miracle of Modern Medicine and celebrated her 90th birthday in 2015, fully recovered!) They had many common interests and kept in touch, and then Angela asked Brian if he would like to buy the Pen-y-Bont Hotel with her. He thought about it for a nanosecond and said "Yes" ("Shall I spend another 12 years teaching challenging secondary school students or shall I go on an adventure with a beautiful blond lady?" Not a hard decision!) As well as taking great pleasure in welcoming our guests to our hotel we are involved in Music Production and other life affirming activities when possible! We look forward to welcoming you to our little piece of heaven on earth!
Talyllyn is in a secluded valley in a quiet part of Southern Snowdonia. The lake view from the Pen-y-Bont Hotel is iconic, seen very much at it's best from our extensive Beer Garden and Car Park. Many of our competitors and other local businesses use these scenes in their promo material, which will give you some idea of just how special the view is from here. The name means "Brow of the Lake". Talyllyn Lake is more correctly called Llyn Mwyngil which may mean "Pleasant Narrow Lake" or "The Lake of Pleasant Retreat" in reference to a monk's cell which may have existed on or near the site of St. Mary's Church across the road from us. We are at the foot of Cadair Idris, the largest mountain in South Snowdonia at nearly 3,000 feet. It is a very popular climb, which is why we prepare our guests with a very hearty full Welsh Breakfast, and are well prepared for the return of the hungry with home-cooked meals and real chips! We can tell you a great deal about the area if you visit...The Talyllyn hoard was found by the Minffordd Path in 1963. These bronze shield decorations had been there since the 2nd Century B.C. We are very lucky to have beautiful sites of interest close by.
