Laundry is available at an extra charge. The rooms are defnitely very antiquated as it was a repurposed former post office as I understand from the proprietor, but it's got plenty of character and the room I got was huge (about 8 tatami mats). Location wise it was OK to get to by bus, and has 2 convenince stores within walking access. It is also easily accessible to other locations around Hakone by bus, including Lake Ashi.

The host was super friendly, always happy to chat and answer questions about history and tradition and helped me find my way around Kawagoe, showed me all the must see spots, bars and restaurants. There’s also a little garden in the back and the bar area seems to be the local hang out spot in the evening which is super cool.

So clean, they clean everyday and it’s always spotless. The host is so lovely. Her dog is so cute and friendly too! Sometimes he’ll greet you at the door, this meant so much to me especially when I was missing my dog at home. The neighborhood is AMAZING. I love Koenji so much. A perfect, calm getaway from the city with still plenty of things to do. Great restaurants, thrifting, karaoke, parks, and Japanese vibes. Also Nakano is a 20 min walk away and they have a mall with Uniqlo and everything else you’d need. It’s easy to meet other people and make friends! Women-only was awesome and made me feel really safe. I can’t wait to go back and spend my entire Japan trip here. I shouldn’t have bothered with any other hotels. Nothing compares to Grapehouse Koenji!
