The owner even gifted each of us beautiful bukhoor before we left and waved us goodbye until we were out of sight. It felt like leaving family. They went out of their way to help us find an adapter we needed, and little touches like complimentary coffee and dates always available at the reception made us feel incredibly at home. The terrace offers a stunning view which is perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring or for enjoying sunrise. The guesthouse itself is impeccably clean, tastefully decorated in traditional Omani style, and has everything you could possibly need. The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of old Nizwa. You can easily walk to the souq, the fort, and all the main attractions. It’s also just a short stroll from where the Mwasalat Muscat–Nizwa buses drop you off. This was truly one of the most memorable stays of my life. The hospitality, the atmosphere, the comfort...everything was perfect. I will absolutely stay here again when I return to Nizwa. Highly, highly recommended!

Situated in Al Ḩamrāʼ, 44 km from Nizwa Fort, Alqalah Inn features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and a tour desk. This guest house also has a heated pool. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. The inn was of mud brick and nicely decorated. Our room was very comfortable. The bathroom was very clean and the shower was lovely and hot. The location was great, near a deserted mud brick village and a date plantation. It was a short walk into town. From the Inn it’s a short drive to Misfah La Abriyyin, which is definitely worth a visit.

The area is popular for hiking, and free use of bicycles is available at the homestay. An indoor play area is also available for guests at 228Hostel. Mahmood is an excellent host who fully embodies the spirit of Omani hospitality. He was quick to reply via Booking.com and WhatsApp, always around and more than happy to answer my numerous questions — from the general ones about his country, to the very specific ones about the area. He keeps booklets in English with hiking trail maps, useful information about Oman and a crash course on Omani dress code and culture. He founded the hostel as he wanted to meet people from different cultures and that’s clearly visible by the scratch map of countries he’s hosted people from and his currency notes collection. Whilst I only stayed a single night (would have loved to stay longer), he took me and the other two guests out for an authentic meal in Al Hamra! Go stay with Mahmood, he’s an awesome and caring guy.
