Situated in Kaminoyama in the Yamagata region, Snowfall Meteor 飛雪流星 has a garden. It is located 2.2 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort and provides luggage storage space. The guest house features family rooms. The hosts were more than friendly. The beds are comfortable and the room is clean. The floor heating in the rooms provides warmth without decreasing humidity. The most comfortable stay I had during my ski trip. The hosts will drop off and pick up guests at the lifts so you can enjoy the Zao mountain. Not much around the location so be sure to eat before returning to the hostel.

At the homestay, all units are fitted with a wardrobe. Each unit comes with a shared bathroom. At the homestay, every unit is fitted with bed linen and towels.

The homestay is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. I stayed at Zao Onsen for 3 nights during my solo travels in Japan in early 2025. The walk from Zao Onsen Bus Terminal to Matsuo House was about 5 minutes and allowed me to get a feel for the small onsen town: from the quaint shops and restaurants, to the scent of sulfur from the hot springs, and the ski resort towering over you from almost every angle. I immediately fell in love with it. Matsuo House was the perfect accommodation to complement such a magical destination. The hosts and their charming young daughter were more than happy to converse with and assist their guests, speaking in several languages. All guest rooms were on the second floor, lined with tatami mats and large windows that offered views of the snowy streets outside. The futon provided was warm and comfortable, perfect for a good night's rest after skiing. Upon check-in, one of the hosts provides two maps and helps you learn the layout of the town, offering tips and tricks to ensure the best possible experience. They provide onsen passes and discounts, recommendations and discounts for local ski rental shops, and essential information on what to do and where to go. The ski resort is about a 10-15 minute walk from Matsuo House, and you can find at least 10 onsens within a 15-minute walk. The town's only 24-hour convenience store (combini) is also less than a 10-minute walk away. If you're seeking a getaway from the crowds and wish to experience Japan's countryside beauty, visit Zao Onsen and stay at Matsuo House to truly immerse yourself in the culture and natural splendor. I can't wait to come back!

Featuring a 24-hour front desk, this property also has a family-friendly restaurant and a picnic area. The guest house also provides free WiFi, free private parking and facilities for disabled guests. The owner is welcoming and enthusiastic. The meals were home-cooked, and quite delightful. The owner helped us facilitate a side trip in the area, very kindly. It's a remote rural location, which has its own beauty.

Yamagata Zao Pension Aplon Stage is a 3-star property set in Kaminoyama. It offers free WiFi, ski-to-door access, a garden and a restaurant. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.
