FAQs about hotels in Reno

A Less Outrageous Vegas

In many respects Reno is a less outlandish version of its Nevada cousin Las Vegas. Within minutes of landing at Reno-Tahoe Airport you can be hearing the dinging of slot machines on Virginia Street where a glowing neon arch welcomes you to ‘The Biggest Little City in the World’.

Across the plaza is Harrah’s Reno, just one casino hotel available on Booking.com. Larger casinos with spas, such as Peppermill and Atlantis, are off the main strip. The largest is the Grand Sierra Resort with its own amusement park, large pool and night club. Pet-friendly motels and cheap hostels are other options.

Aside from gambling, the city hosts many events including the Reno River Festival in Wingfield Park. The Truckee River Walk connects shops, restaurants and bars popular with students at the nearby University of Nevada, the state’s oldest. The campus includes the Mackay Stadium and Fleischmann Science Center and Planetarium, set opposite the arboretum of Rancho San Rafael Park.

The Nevada Museum of Art is in Reno and neighbouring Sparks has a Heritage Museum. The 2 cities share a convention centre and livestock events centre, and there are many golf courses in their green surroundings. Even lusher are the Sierra Nevada mountains, whose peaks around Lake Tahoe offer some of the best US skiing.

I hadn’t been to Reno in over 20 years, though I’d been there dozens of times growing up and as an adult. On this visit, we walked around in the evening, and honestly, every casino felt the same. Nothing really stood out as particularly fun or unique, and all of them were filled with cigarette smoke. The casinos are kind of connected like a mall, and while there are plenty of restaurants, even the ones advertised as “feature” spots were expensive for what they offered. Drinks weren’t cheap either, and it definitely doesn't have the same atmosphere or energy as Vegas, if that is what you are looking for. Also, I don’t remember Vegas being nearly as smoky. I remember when you could get cheap or even free drinks while gambling, but not on this trip. I gambled for hours and wasn’t offered a single drink, and even water cost money. The cheap eats that used to be everywhere were gone. Everything was very pricey for what it is. We visited the car museum the next day, and that was absolutely worth it. There are a few other non-casino attractions that might be enjoyable, but overall, Reno just isn’t the kind of place I’d make a destination for future trips. It’s worth visiting at least once, but for me, that’s probably enough.

I wasn't really impressed with downtown Reno. The outlying areas were much more accommodable. Better entertainment, better attractions and a better value. Too many homeless people and boarded up businesses in the downtown area. Looked trashy.

I always like Reno since my son lived here all his life and died here so I will always visit Reno until the day I am no longer here. Finding out about circus circus and how comfortable and affordable they are, it will be my destination for always. So expect me back. My son is at Mountain View Cemetery because he loved Reno and it's history, I fulfilled his wishes . He died of cancer at 47 years old. My only son.

Reno is a quiet place. Stay near Trucker River down town. Not at casino unless you like to gamble. The city is noisey at night. Stay out of city if you can. We ubered everywhere. Ate a place called Two Chicks. Also at a place in the hotel for breakfast and went over to Millie’s in the El Dorado which was good.

Not a gambler, so aside from a one or two days exploring the city itself, appreciated it more as a base for day trips to Virginia City (fab!), Carson City, Washoe Lake, Truckee/Tahoe, and outdoor adventures.

Downtown Reno feels abandoned and dilapidated, with. many of the buildings along Virginia Street shuttered. The murals are great, but overall the streets are not welcoming. The park along the Truckee River was a nice start, but it needs more. Midtown Reno seemed nicer - but "nice" in the way of a suburban town, rather than a vacation destination. The best part of our stay was when we accidentally stumbled across a dress rehearsal of the Nevada Dance Company in front of the Pioneer Center. We sat and watched a terrific dance performance for free in the plaza area.

I stayed in this place long time ago when it was the sands, I told myself I would never stay here again, but like life we gave it a second changes with the new makeup of the hotel know as the J resort. The best part of this resort is the parking garage, I can go direct from my room and catch the elevator to the garage, don't have to walk the lobby like other hotel. Hanna's restaurant food was good, just need more training with the waitress to concentrate on the customer.

It was a nice hotel with several different places to eat connected. You can go to several different casinos that are connected to the hotel all together. I was not long enough in Reno to enjoy more optional activities.
