Faro is the picturesque capital of the Algarve region, offering colourful streets and buildings, Moorish influence, and typical Portuguese charm. It is encompassed by the lagoon of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and offers wide beaches, a laid-back atmosphere, and a vibrant nightlife.
Occupied by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and once an important Roman harbour and Moorish culture capital, it was almost flattened by the 1755 earthquake. Faro was a welcome change from the intense crowds in Lisbon and Porto. It was also an easy pedestrian walking area with lots of shops and restaurants, though, for a weekend, many were closed. Only 2 days there. Easy to walk everywhere. Cathedral looks nothing from the outside, but when you go in - Wow! (better than Porto or Lisbon). Only time to sample one restaurant - Tasco do Ricky - very good. Took the ferry to Ilha Deserta (£26 for 3 return) for 1.5hrs on the water - great value, especially as dolphins appeared on our return trip - fabulous! Faro is fantastic place. It is a good starting point for boat trips and other activities. The beaches in Faro are very nice and not overcrowded. You find many places that serve good food. I would always come back and stay even longer.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0
Faro has a lot to offer.
Faro has a lot to offer. The Ria Formosa nature reserve is extremely close by (highlights are dolphin and bird watching, lovely islands and beaches). In Faro we could enjoy the Festa de Ria Formosa (a seafood festival), restaurants with very good and fresh food, an interesting photo exhibition, a very good food and drink tour (we visited most of the restaurants again in the following days) and a Portuguese guitar performance (don't miss it!). You can also go to Faro beach (by bus or ferry) and have a leisurely time there (there are also good seafront restaurants close to the bus station) or go to Ludo trail and watch flamingoes (get there by bus and walk). It's also recommended to visit the adjacent towns (via train or bus), e.g. we went to the Saturday market in Loule and enjoyed it a lot. We would have liked to stay a couple of days longer (not _very_ much longer because the weather forecast announced quite scorching temperatures the following week). Small and perfectly formed, good location for ferries to the Ria Formosa islands, and Praia Faro beach Cute little old town, good range of restaurants to satisfy all tastes, good transport to and from airport, train services to other towns along Algarve coast For boat trips go along to the yellow house further to the east of the marina and look for all the HOHO and ferry providers. Do not fall for the "group trips" by the central marina - there are many more much better value providers where the ferries depart from! The HOHO to the 3 islands for 35 euros is very good value, valid all day until the final ferry goes back to Faro, and great fun in the bright yellow RIB boats Just be aware that all pavements throughout the old town (sidewalks for the US readers) are all of very shiny stones, little cubes set into cement, which can be very slippery, and therefore not very accessible for those with mobility difficulties. However with a slowed walking pace, they are totally manageable, and obviously you can see more of the town at a slower walk!
