Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous.
The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous. We went at opening time and stayed all day. The morning offered the best viewing as there were less visitors(Most day trippers from Tokyo arrive in the afternoon). It is still very popular throughout the day but there is much more chance of getting a preferred angle to photograph the monkeys in the morning. However opportunities arise throughout the day. We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was more interested in seeing the snow monkeys! I agree that the monkeys were amazing, but if planning to go, get snow spikes for the walk up, as it is icey and slippery and these are essential. Good place to stay if you are looking to self-drive and scenery is great! Not too crowded with tourist(in my opinion), near to Nakano town where you want to some small groceries shopping there. The rooms are beautiful, it's always nice and warm inside in winter and everything is extremely clean. Our hosts were super friendly and helped out with anything we needed. We don't ask or Snowboard, so they helped us plan other daytrips. There is a big kitchen for if you want to cook and common areas for if you just want to relax.
