Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous.
The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous. We went at opening time and stayed all day. The morning offered the best viewing as there were less visitors(Most day trippers from Tokyo arrive in the afternoon). It is still very popular throughout the day but there is much more chance of getting a preferred angle to photograph the monkeys in the morning. However opportunities arise throughout the day. We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was more interested in seeing the snow monkeys! I agree that the monkeys were amazing, but if planning to go, get snow spikes for the walk up, as it is icey and slippery and these are essential. Good place to stay if you are looking to self-drive and scenery is great! Not too crowded with tourist(in my opinion), near to Nakano town where you want to some small groceries shopping there. You can do snowshoe tour in shiga kogen, monkey park and many nice restaurant to have your meal.Guest review byMingli

We went off-season so it was very quiet and peaceful to stroll around the little town and visit the public onsen with the yukata and shoes provided by the ryokan. The best one was the bath in the hotel though. They also offer a free shuttle service for the station and monkey park as well.
