Restaurants outside hotels are limited, so opt in for meals at hotel if possible. The hikes were wonderful. 2 hour hike and you can see it all. Go early to avoid the visitor crush. Definitely recommended to have a car.
Definitely recommended to have a car. Explore Noboribetsu Onsen, Hell Valley. Day or Half-Day trips to Lake Kuttara, Lake Toya (and Toyako Onsen) are highly recommended. Spend a day trip driving to Hell Valley, and then to Muroran. 2-3 days is sufficient. If travelling by bus or train, make sure to get the schedule beforehand.
