We walked to the Togoshu Shrine; make sure you're prepared for uphill walks and a lot of stairs. The Main Street leading to the shrine was amazing. A ton of food vendors and restaurants. Touristy, somewhat charmless town that is nevertheless worth it for the magnificent shrines (Shinto, and the resting places of the first and third shoguns) and temples (Buddhist) and the museum (splurge on the museum! Seriously). Many people go to see these buildings + the red bridge (which is merely fine - short and not really noteworthy), but don't venture to the outskirts of Nikko to take in the other sites (Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Botanical Garden, Tamozawa Imperial Villa and much more impressive Nikko Dainichi Bridge).Guest review byChristopherUnited States - 10.0

Nikko is definitely a tourist town.
Nikko is definitely a tourist town. But a very different feel from Tokyo. Although the shrines/temples were inundated with fellow tourists, they were really quite amazing. About a 25min walk from Tobu-Nikko Station if bus is crowded and shuttle not booked (up hill incline, but not too difficult). A little far from the supermarket and konbini, and main food area, but there are restaurants up there (early-ish close). Private onsen available at reasonable price. The hotel staffs are so friendly and able to communicate in English well. Room provided with sufficient facilities. Hotel offered complimentary breakfast which serving rice with Japanese style curry, some side dishes and miso soup. Vegetarian friendly coz the curry based is vegetables. There isn't a picture of the second room (a bedroom with a queen sized comfy bed) on booking.com (negligence on the hotel's part) but I assure you there is one, and it's quite good.
