The main reasson to visit was the Itsukushima Shrine but there was plenty of other shrines and temples to visit. The ropeway to Mt, Misen was great. The hike down not so much (not a trail, mainly steps - hard on the knees.

Miyajima was great for walking around and doing the ropeway to the top. A lot of little eateries and street food- good if you like seafood. Scenic with the giant Tori gate and shrines, woods, deer walking around. Miyajima was one of my favorite spots on our trip to Japan.

It does get busy during the day when lots of tourists come over by ferry for the day however we hired bikes and managed to stay clear of the crowds for the most part. The Island becomes very quite in the evening which is perfect, I would advise that you book a restaurant as lots of the island closes around 5-6pm so anything that is open later gets booked up. We were very lucky to just get the last free table on two occasions. Also the deer wandering around especially in the dusk and evening before al the ferries drop off are enchanting, however they are not like the deer in Nara park and there are lots of signs that remind people not to feed or bother the deer, not everyone follows these rules which is disappointing.

It was my second trip to Miyajima island.

It was my second trip to Miyajima island. The first time I only travelled their with my wife and we did not stay in any accommodation. I left back on the ferry same day feeling that I had to eventually return. I was able to do that and I loved every moment. It's an island I would consider going back too again and staying over again. The island offers so much. For those that want heritage and history, tick. For those that want a close encounter with a deers, tick. For those who love calm beaches or mountains, tick. For those that want experiences with friendly locals, tick. Those wanting to do shopping, especially souveniours, tick. For those who want physical activity, the walking trails up the mountain are a definite tick. I could go on, but, for so many reasons I love and would highly recommend travel to Miyajima.

Miyajima is simply magical!

Miyajima is simply magical! From the moment you step off the ferry, you’re surrounded by stunning natural beauty, peaceful shrines, and the famous floating torii gate—it truly feels like stepping into a sacred, timeless world. One of the most enchanting parts of the island was wandering through the smaller shrines tucked into the forest, where rows of little Buddha statues wear hand-knitted red hats and bibs. There’s something incredibly touching and serene about them—like the whole island is wrapped in quiet reverence. Add in the friendly deer, delicious street food (don’t miss the grilled oysters and momiji manju!), and the breathtaking views from Mount Misen, and Miyajima easily became one of our favorite places in Japan. I didn’t want to leave!

We (myself and Mr 11) had a private room and loved the traditional ryokan set up. Setting up the beds ourself was fun and the futons were incredibly comfortable. The staff were super welcoming. We didn’t take advantage of the included food. The shared showers were clean and easy to get into. Plus there was a private showers you could book. The view was breathtaking. We could see the water from our window. The hotel happily stored our bag before and after checkin/out allowing us to keep exploring all the island has to offer.

gorgeous hotel Fantastic staff . great amenities. loved being able to choose our yukatas. Gained confidence at using the onsen. Kaiseke dinner was truly amazing in a private room and the lady who served us could not have been nicer. wished we had more time in Miyajima. great views of the famous tori gate during the sunset from the root top bar and a 2minute walk for the sunrise the following morning before the crowds arrived.

Good reasons to stay in Sakuraya: - Location (on the island Miyajima!). - Kindness of the staff. - Japanese style rooms (warning! Sleeping on a Japanese futon might be uncomfortable if you are picky with mattresses). - Onsen in the basement to get a relaxing bath at the end of the day. - Breakfast for 500 yens. The breakfast is not very generous, but it is a good deal for that price.

Amazing places like this need to be supported! A unique and wonderful classic hotel experience - full of atmosphere, a great traditional Japanese ryokan. The staff were incredible, even offering to collect our bags from the ferry early so we could explore Miyajima. As well as that, it has its own onsen on site! Cannot recommend this enough.
