Hokuto is a bit of an off-the-beaten-track destination,...
Hokuto is a bit of an off-the-beaten-track destination, perfect for a weekend or even 3 or four days. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it's a great place for hikers - since it's located at the base of the Yatsugatake mountain range. The adventurers can go explore the hiking trails and waterfalls, but also there are charming cafes, art galleries and international cuisine restaurants splattered in the area. I would avoid going there by car on a Saturday morning, because the Chuo Express Road gets packed and it may take up to six hours to get there from Tokyo (the normal is 2 hours). The place itself is not a new place but has bags of character - this is not a chain, but an old style hotel with great attention to detail and attentive staff. Check out the lounge and the collection of LPs if you have time after enjoying the onsen! I was welcomed by a nice and friendly host and the rooms were very clean. All amenities were provided in abundance, which was really nice.
