Extremely beautiful village very clean, even in middle of July, it did not feel overcrowded, easy walk to all attractions, Villa Monastero gardens is a must. Enjoyed, 4hrs in Billagio for sightseeing and shopping although very crowded. Side trip via bus to the gorge in Bellano was a highlight. Varenna was extremely safe, beautiful and not too crowded the last week of July. Everything that you needed from groceries, fruit, baked goods, breakfast, lunch and dinner were all withing steps of each other. If you are looking for a "shopping" experience, this town is not for you, but if you are looking for a low key, relaxing, and beautiful place on Lake Como, Varenna is for you.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Varenna is a very attractive lakeshore village to spend a couple of days and has the advantage of excellent connections by ferry to other places on the lake, and by rail. Small enough to walk round and see in a day. Lovely just to sit by the lake or in the small central square and watch the world go by, although exploring the alleys is enjoyable too. It has a range of eating places, though accommodation is tighter for those wanting to stay over rather than making a day trip. It is charming and exactly the Italy that Iove.
It is charming and exactly the Italy that Iove. The only drawback is that the "streets" are extremely steep and of course cobblestoned. It is what makes it so perfect but also a bit hard to navigate at times but not if you are younger - lol.Guest review byCathyUnited States

The walk to the centre of town isn't too far either and you can walk by the lakeside to get there. Host is great and had helpful communication prior to our stay. They went the extra mile to help make our stay special as well. The kitchen is well equipped and the terrace is lovely on a sunny day with a lovely view of the lake! We also hopped on the train to Bellano to see the gorge - all super easy as apartment well situated by station / ferries. The apartment is perfect, very comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen as many places closed in the winter so self-catering important (you need to shop/supermarket before getting to Varenna though!). There’s a small grocery shop close by, too. In the evenings, a short walk takes you to Lake Como, where you can enjoy stunning sunset views.
