Stresa was such a beautiful place to visit. Don't miss the Terre Borromeo or the Prosecco at Enoteca Da Giannino! We spent 4 nights there (girls trip) - perfect time to slow down after 9 days of travel/site-seeing. One day for the islands, one day for a visit to another town on the lake and one day for wandering in Stresa. Excellent dinners at La Rosa dei Venti and Osteria Mercato. Cocktail prosecco at Enoteca Da Giannino wine bar. Easy access by train, however - not so easy to locate a taxi from the train to your lodging. Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry...
Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry and are assaulted by retail stands. But get past this as quickly as possible to visit the villa and especially the gardens. The restaurant Centrale (Food Family Love) in Stresa is quite nice. We ate there twice. The pumpkin soup is delicious. Do not go to the Cafe Bolongaro across from the navigation offices. High pressure to buy and the pastries were dry and flavorless, as were the beverages. Stresa has some lovely spots, fantastic old hotels, lovely promenade, lots of places to eat. Quite a lot of construction work going on and some additional work needed, I hope they restore all of the old villas as it is sad to see them looking derelict. Fantastic day trips on the ferry, Isola Bella Palace, Mombello bucket lift and Villa Taranto gardens, all really lovely days out. Don't know why all tourist info/maps show the Mottarone Cable car, this has been closed since the tragic accident about 7 years ago and it is misleading.
