Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry and are assaulted by retail stands. But get past this as quickly as possible to visit the villa and especially the gardens. The restaurant Centrale (Food Family Love) in Stresa is quite nice. We ate there twice. The pumpkin soup is delicious. Do not go to the Cafe Bolongaro across from the navigation offices. High pressure to buy and the pastries were dry and flavorless, as were the beverages. Stresa has some lovely spots, fantastic old hotels, lovely promenade, lots of places to eat. Quite a lot of construction work going on and some additional work needed, I hope they restore all of the old villas as it is sad to see them looking derelict. Fantastic day trips on the ferry, Isola Bella Palace, Mombello bucket lift and Villa Taranto gardens, all really lovely days out. Don't know why all tourist info/maps show the Mottarone Cable car, this has been closed since the tragic accident about 7 years ago and it is misleading. Stresa is a resort hotspot.
Stresa is a resort hotspot. Mostly hotels, more hotels, loads of restaurants. However the Borromean islands by Stresa were 100% worth the 2 days we stayed there. One day we spent exploring the islands, the other we spent walking around, dining, relaxing and observing the multiple weddings that were taking place all around town (we counted five weddings on one day!). Cute place for a short stay. If you want a longer stay, set base in Verbania or get a car to drive around Lago Maggiore (we went without a car and did not rent one).Guest review byLysa

You can immediately feel the people’s devotion to their work, their efforts to offer the guests the best experience. They even baked some traditional cookies for the guests which were absolutely delicious. The room was neat and nicely decorated and the view amazing. Their service extended even beyond check-out as they offered support in recovering my lost airpod. Un sogno sul Lago was perfect. There was nothing you could fault about the place. Everything is in excellent condition. Cristina and Fabio are fantastic hosts. From special treats being baked to offering to take and pick you up from either the station or local restaurants. Love the location and could never get enough of the views.
