The ancient Etrurian city of Perugia forms a unique and romantic pattern, and is surrounded by green hills. Take the escalators, go up to the Rocca, and admire the panorama of juxtaposed layers of churches and ‘palazzi’ built during thousands of years. Perugia’s Old Town still houses several hotels and restaurants that are centuries old.
The city has a vibrant cultural life and is home to several important institutions, such as the renowned local university, the University for Foreigners, and other institutes. The International Journalism Festival, the Umbria Jazz, and the Eurochocolate Festival are major annual activities. Perugia is a somewhat hidden gem and not always included in the international travellers' itinerary. This is a mistake. It has much to offer and there are very few international tourists crowding out the place, unlike so many other Italian small cities and towns. It is also very good value for money and has some very interesting and unusual features. The restaurants are very good and represent better value for money than other places in Italy. The streets and squares. Visiting the Etruscan well (as recommended by our hosts) was very interesting. Our hosts also recommended the restaurant Il Cantinone and they were absolutely right. Incredibly beautiful old town with lots of charm. Try to book accomodation in the old town on top of the mountain. Parking difficult. At Piazza Italia, there are street parking spaces for which you can pay on a meter. There was nothing to dislike but older people like us should wear sensible shoes. Most areas are cobbled but it is part of the history. We were at a wedding 25 mins fro Perugia but lunch outside are hotel was great with wonderful views Easy to get round no buses.
