I recently had the pleasure of staying at Palazzo Durazzo and I had the most exceptional experience. From the moment I walked through the doors, it was an Italian fairytale. The architecture, concept, and interior design were extraordinary. Every bedroom is designed after different stories of the city and Italy and the attention to detail in every corner of the hotel was incredible. The bedrooms were simply breathtaking. Elegantly furnished and tastefully decorated, they provided the perfect sanctuary after a long day of exploring the city. The beds were so comfortable and the linens were of the best quality as well as the stunning views of the port from the giant room windows. The bathrooms are truly luxurious and have a beautiful selection of products. The breakfast was composed of the highest quality local food and fruits + a professional chef. Another detail that caught my attention were the luxurious amenities offered by the hotel like the spa and living room spaces. What truly set this hotel apart was the impeccable service provided by the staff. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the genuinely friendly and courteous staff members who went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect. The staff's knowledge of the local area and their willingness to provide recommendations truly enhanced my overall experience. They gave me a tour of some of the bedrooms and I have never seen a hotel with that level of curation. I would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for the ultimate choice for an architecturally rich and chic experience in Genova. It truly exceeded my expectations in every way possible.

The location is great, it is close to the train station, 2 supermarkets, the center of the city, farmacies, restaurants, and most tourist attractions. It's even a block away from the municipal hospital. The rooms are very clean, they seem pretty new. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. They all speak multiple languages fluently. Giorgio, specifically, was very informative and helpful.

The hotel is housed in a Beautiful Palazzo. Access is on the port side, from within the historic portico that runs along that area. Wide marble staircases inside and pillars, high ceilings. Rooms are large and have views of the port. Overhead rain shower, with decent pressure and lots of hot water. Rooms facing the port are quiet despite the vehicle traffic. Staff were polite, respectful and responsive. Breakfast was in a nice room off the check in area, with very high ceilings. Buffet of pastries, meats, cheeses, yogurt. A la carte menu of several types of omelettes and eggs, bacon, toast, caprices salad, pancakes/waffles.

FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

It was very difficult to find reliable information about places to visit while we stayed in Genoa!! We went to the Tourist Information office on our first day, and there didn't seem to be many of the usual leaflets or posters around. We did ask for information about the Hop-On-Hop-Off tourist bus, and the staff had a leaflet behind the counter, like it was some kind of secret. So it felt like you had to know what you wanted to do or where you wanted to visit in order to ask for it, which is kind of the opposite of what a Tourist Info office should be. The staff also didn't seem to know about one of the main Palazzos being closed for the rest of the month, so were giving people information about its opening times even though that information was wrong. Even the posters/info with QR codes on them mostly led to websites that were out of date or had very little useful information on them. We left Genoa very weary and disappointed after staying for 4 nights, having walked to many places that turned out to be closed. There MUST be a ton of interesting things to do in Genoa, and we did find some of them for ourselves (by basically researching on Google Maps and TripAdvisor etc), but wow, it felt like quite a chore. Good stuff: the wacky public transport options (elevators, funicular railways, rack railway, train/lift on Via Balbi that goes up to the Castello D'Albertis (which is also worth a visit); the food; the things that are actually open (as long as you can find out their secret opening times).

I did not visit just Genova but the whole part of Rivera del Levante until Monterosso including Camogli, Rapallo and Portofino. Really nice Ligurian places. In Genova I was around 2 days which was just enough for this time. I would like to revisit Genova together with other Ligurian towns in the future.

Genoa is a charming city with something for everyone.

Genoa is a charming city with something for everyone. It has a splendid port full of some amazing boats and ships. The aquarium was well worth the visit, beiing able to see the sea life at such a close distance and it seemed to go on and on with so much to enjoy - I particularly loved how the dolphins were trying to play and intereact with the people. There is so much beautiful architecture with churches, museums and castles, some buildings dating back to medieval times. There are plenty of caffes and restaraunts and shops. There speciality dishes were the many types of forcacia breads and their special pasta dish with 'troffie' pasta and pesto sauces with potato and green beans, the basil seems to grow in abundance there so the foods were freshly cooked. For beach lovers, there are also some good beaches, although for us, we spent our time exploring the city with its castles and churches and just taking in the amuance of this exciting city.

Genoa is a bit of a weird city, where you can change the vibe in 20 meters. From ancient palaces, to small no-so-nice streets, to large poshy street, to traditional place to eat and share with local people. It actually takes some times to get used to it, but it is definitely lovely and lively.

    Genova is an interesting city.

Genova is an interesting city. Now, you can find lots of info on the internet, so I will not repeat. What I find interesting about Genova is the upper parts of it (up hill) and those areas outside the Old Town and the port - those two are nice but classic touristy places. I would like to go back to the city for a longer time, to have time to explore those "real city" areas.

The hotel is very well positioned right next to the main train station which makes it a very good base to start exploring the zone. And here I mean Cinque Terre as well as Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli. It is also within walking range to the Acquarium and touristic port. The breakfast has multiple choices and the best caffee I ever had in a hotel in Italy at breakfast. The air conditioning worked like a charm and it was very efficient.

I loved that the hotel is on the beach, literally, there is about a 20m distance from the wall to the water, absolutely smashing, I snorkeled for hours, the rocks behind the hotel are full of fish and there are quite a few species. I asked a woman in the reception for a toothbrush and she didn’t have one by the counter so she literally ran up the stairs to their cleaning tools cabinet and got me one and brought it to my room. That is what i call service. Not so common during my earlier stay in other hotels in Italy, so big shoutout to you
