Ship Shape and Fancy Free
Hugging the Ligurian coastline, Genoa boasts Europe’s largest old town and Italy’s largest seaport. As birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.
By the old port (Porto Antico) are several bars and restaurants serving the local speciality – pesto. Other Genoese favourites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade – Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighbourhood, where colourful boats bob up and down.
The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.
South is the old town with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

Genoa is a charming city with something for everyone.
Genoa is a charming city with something for everyone. It has a splendid port full of some amazing boats and ships. The aquarium was well worth the visit, beiing able to see the sea life at such a close distance and it seemed to go on and on with so much to enjoy - I particularly loved how the dolphins were trying to play and intereact with the people. There is so much beautiful architecture with churches, museums and castles, some buildings dating back to medieval times. There are plenty of caffes and restaraunts and shops. There speciality dishes were the many types of forcacia breads and their special pasta dish with 'troffie' pasta and pesto sauces with potato and green beans, the basil seems to grow in abundance there so the foods were freshly cooked. For beach lovers, there are also some good beaches, although for us, we spent our time exploring the city with its castles and churches and just taking in the amuance of this exciting city.Guest review bySarahItaly - 8.0

From ancient palaces, to small no-so-nice streets, to large poshy street, to traditional place to eat and share with local people. Genova is an interesting city. Now, you can find lots of info on the internet, so I will not repeat. What I find interesting about Genova is the upper parts of it (up hill) and those areas outside the Old Town and the port - those two are nice but classic touristy places. Nice city, with beautiful architecture and many historical buildings. The city has many levels, so, one has to climb some stairs every now and then. Perhaps, visiting it in autumn would be better as August was too hot. A beautiful, impressive city. For €2, you can take a bus to any beach on the Ligurian coast. Eastern Genoa is well-kept, as is the old town, but unfortunately the western part is not. Frozen seafood from China for 12 euros?!? But the focaccia is fresh, the pastries and ice cream are very good. Genoa is a fantastic place to stay—more diverse and a bit rougher around the edges compared to Pisa and Florence, where I stayed earlier.
