FAQs about hotels in Bari

Important Port of Saintly Significance

The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours:  cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.

Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.

The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.

Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

    Lots to see and do.

Lots to see and do. Did walking tour with pasta making experience and a sunset street food tour. Both were very good. Did not have much time for shopping but could easily have spent another day there for that. Lots of info about celebrations in May and Dec that we found intriguing and would not mind coming back for either of the festivals.

The "Old Town" is an interesting place to explore. The fortress is closed on Mondays. St Nicolas Basilica is magnificent and the tomb in the beautiful crypt is a must see. Bari can be explored in a day.

Bari is really the old town plus a few sites of interest (eg theatre which was being renovated when we were there). Lots of touristy offers - food tours, cooking courses, cycle rides etc. However the train service from Bari is excellent and it is a good base for getting about (Polignano a Mare, Alberobello etc). Beware if you take a car because parking is a nightmare. Restaurants are everywhere and can be a bit pushy on the main areas but in the back streets are some fabulous fish and seafood places. We enjoyed the cookery course (50€ per person) and the walking.

We were very impressed with the cleanliness of Bari compared to so many other cities in Italy. It was refreshing to walk around and not see so much graffiti and debris on the streets. The city is very vibrant and easy to walk around. We enjoyed the historic part of town and all the restaurants. All in all, Bari is a very enjoyable Italian city.

Bari is an excellent city with a very special southern Italian charm and friendly locals. The Bari Vecchio is worth many visits - you will get lost but it doesn't matter as that way you find things you weren't looking for! We took the Bari Street Fod Walking Tour, the guide was very informative and introduced to splendid food as well as introducing us to the Vecchio area. The Panificio Fiore Bari's fresh and warm focaccia was the best I have ever tasted. Just eat it in the street. There will be a queue of locals which shows how good it is

The best hotel you can find in Bari. Excellent location near the Sparano area with all the shops nearby. Large spacious and clean rooms with new furniture. The room included an abundant and delicious breakfast. Very qualified and hospitable staff. Agata, the lady who was in charge of management, was very kind and available for any need we had.
