Great Opening to Croatia
The only capital city in the world with a ski world cup race, Zagreb sits over 120 metres above sea level and boasts typical Central European architecture: cobbled streets, impressive public buildings and well laid out greenery.
Built around two medieval settlements with the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) being its core, the city skilfully combines modern attractions with well-established favourites. Great old city with lots of history and places to eat. They had an earthquake a few years back that damaged a lot of old buildings especially the cathedral. The hotel is right off the main square. Plus the tram system is very convenient and cheap at 0.53 Euros per ride. Also, had great pizza at Karijola at Vlaska 63 across from the Importanne building. Unfortunately this was the only place we felt was unwelcoming. Very dirty town and the earthquake damage is still very evident. No way to have a car there. Friendly and upbeat vibe welcoming all ages. Lots of street cafes and restaurants... lovely place to chill and mooch around gently. We walked all over upper and lower town. It was very helpful to have accommodation near the tram line. Easy trip to the main square in town where the visitors' information centre is located. They provided me with a map and advice and I believe that I saw the best of Zagreb old town and "horse shoe" on foot in the morning that I had there. The museums & art galleries . The ski lift at Sljeme is a must do ! It takes you up the mountain , from where the city of ZAGREB can be seen like a map . Go up the tower ( separate charge ) and the view is better again ! Tkalcica street & Skalinska street , are lined with bars , cafes , ice cream parlours , and restaurants , that cater for all tastes , from Croatian to Indian . No matter what your taste buds are , you will find something you will like . Transport in Zagreb is superb , and once you know what tram you need to take , you will be waiting no longer than 10 minutes for itGuest review byJOHN
