The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and featuring limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soft drinks Pipi and Orela.

Arrived in Split on September 2 and stayed until September...
Arrived in Split on September 2 and stayed until September 21. We rented a car from September 2 through September 12. It was easy driving around through the many cities and into Bosnia and Montenegro. There so much to see, so we touched on some of the National Parks and saw the many waterfalls as we drove up the coast. We stayed at a different location every night. The weather was perfect. On September 13 we boarded a Katrina Line (Majestic) boat and traveled to many of the islands by sea stopping to swim in the most beautiful water I have ever seen. We had tours in several cities to get a better understanding of the history. Overall, this was a great trip to a very lush and beautiful country. They have delicious wine, and the food was very good. What a wonderful place to visit.
What a wonderful place to visit. Strongly recommend a knowledgeable professional historian guide. Split is a very unique city with a very unique history. They physical layout and structure of the city is so interesting and you can see and experience the history of how it developed over time. We visited in October so it was cool but sunny. Cruise ship crowds every day but evenings were less crowded. We stayed 4 days and did a lot of walking in & outside of Old Town. Historic Split was every bit the eye opener we hoped it would be, a modern city 5 minutes from natural beaches ideal for swimming. But the crowning aspect is the way Croatians have used their historical building to continue living in, using as restaurants, homes, apartments and flats. Split & the whole of Croatia has so much history to explore. I would recommend a walking tour, unfortunately we did not have enough time. The shops are lovely to walk around, blended into Diocletian's palace, beautiful place. Picasso's cafeb/bar beside our accommodation was lovely for breakfast, get there early as it fills up quickly. Very good style that the owner leaves them in the apartment for the future guests. The apartment is just next to the big square in the old town.
