Looe has character, great charm, really good amenities and...
Looe has character, great charm, really good amenities and excellent beaches. A working fishing port as well as a major tourist town it offers an insight into Cornish life as a town where people actually live and work, co-existing with holidaymakers rather than being a second-home nightmare. I found local people really friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere is vibrant and unpretentious with a wide cross-section of humanity visiting to enjoy this very special coastal town. The coastal walks in both directions from the town along the South West Coastal Path are wonderful and offer fine views and the way that the coastline wraps around Looe Bay makes for an idyllic outlook and adds to the experience. At the end of my week's stay in Looe I felt invigorated by the sea and stunning coastal light, welcomed by a friendly working port town and I even got to watch Kris Marshall and the cast of Beyond Paradise filming an episode of the series on the beach. The series captures the essence of life in Looe; a Cornish gem where friendly, hard-working people welcome visitors to their unique and colourful town. The town is small and the people are friendly. The harbour area and the beach are popular. A good location to explore other areas & for coastal path walks. We ate in the Fifty restaurant , small and cosy. The food is delicious, fresh & well presented. Above average price, reservation recommended. Looe has a bustling high street, with lots of shops, cafes, pubs. It is also very attractive with a river flowing through the town. Nice coastal walk from Looe to Polperro, frequent busses back to Looe. Looe beach was sandy and good for swimming, rock-pooling etc. For surfing, Newquay was only 90 drive by car. Boat-trips available from the harbour - we did the 'Big Three' trip on a rib. Busy Cornish harbour town with plenty of gift shops , takeaways , cafes and restaurants . We ate Fish & Chips at Catch , which we gave 10/10z. We had takeaway from the Peking garden . We all enjoyed our dinner at Suggkers Cott . We finished our week at the Sardine factory which was good . Looe was such a quaint and pretty little town with lots of little shops and restaurants to visit. The main beach area looked fabulous but it does not allow dogs on it so we took our spaniel to a nearby beach with rockpools. We also visited Polperro and the Eden Project which were near-by. Most restaurants don't allow dogs though and require advance booking during busy periods. Most pubs allow dogs in and most provide water and some provide a basket for them. Accomodation was spotless, all needed facilities, very comfortable. Very quiet and peaceful area, enclosed patio with furniture to enjoy meals and drinks, dark skies, have not seen so many stars in years. Bed very comfortable, all linen included, we took our own towels but did not need to. Narrow, windy and steep access road which was fun to navigate, some people might find it a struggle, but it's Cornwall so that is not uncommon I would say.
