We booked this B&B as we had a rescheduling of our ferry to the Isle of Mull and needed to depart from Lochaline instead of Oban. As such, we only booked one night and that pretty much last minute. However, we were received with a very warm welcome and the room was just perfect for us (family 4, with 2 kids at 6 and 8 years old). As we were taking the first ferry from Lochaline and would thus miss the breakfast, we were immediately asked if anything could be prepared for us to be ready as take-away breakfast. The hospitality and room were fantastic and we'd highly recommend a stay in case you're looking for accommodation in this area of Scotland!

Mingarry Park

Acharacle (Near Strontian)

Luxury Highland retreat with award-winning dining, stunning mountain views and a warm Scottish welcome.

The Mingarry is a “boutique hotel” of 8 rooms where the host, Emma, gives personal service. The entire hotel: entry, room, restaurant, is beautifully decorated. At the entry, there’s a little bookcase gift shop of postcards, journals and other locally-themed and locally-made items. We stayed in the Mingarry Room. The living room area was huge with a large sofa, coffee table and desk and a tiny balcony that felt very safe. A little table and two chairs were provided and the balcony offered a great view of the highlands and the surrounding fields. Not a dramatic view but a quiet and calm one. The bedroom included nightstands, another desk, and a little bench to sit on to enjoy the view from the window. Skylight in the bathroom which was really nice to let light in but keep the bathroom private. The bathrobes were huge fluffy, so luxurious! The bed was so soft and we slept really well. The living room included a Nespresso machine and tea kettle with teas, instant coffee and cocoa, biscuits. There was also a small fridge with mini-bar with free waters along with liquors and luxury snack items for a fee. Behind the hotel is a lovely grassy field, ponds and farm ducks. In the field were three, clear geodomes to relax in style! Each “pod” kept the cold and the bugs out. Inside each pod is a heater, love seat and lounge chairs that can seat 4, a coffee table and lights. Mimosas on arrival (can’t beat that!) and Emma will also deliver snacks, desserts or libations. The attached restaurant—hands down, the best food of our trip! Their Cullen Skink is to die for! The menu changes frequently according to the availability of local produce. There are few tables and there are few restaurants in the area so having a reservation is a good idea. The restaurant includes a bar with a good selection of local whiskies and gins. There was plenty of parking. A car is needed to get here and to the area attractions. Most of the roads are single lane but the drive is worth it!

We decided to get married at the Airds hotel due to it’s beautiful location and scenery. Our stay was perfect from start to finish. 12 of us stayed in total and we all had a fantastic weekend. All rooms are spacious and nicely refurbished. Rooms to the front of the hotel have a gorgeous view. The food is lovely and the staff are so attentive. Katie, Lee and Ross couldn’t have done any more for us. Thank you very much Team Airds.

Loved the decorations, the wood stove, and the comfortable beds! The communications were great. We appreciated the thoughtful treats upon arrival! Hospitality was excellent. The kitchen was a bit narrow but perfectly functional. Some cookware needed a thorough cleaning. I mentioned it to the host, who accepted responsibilities and was very graceful. The building is traditional and beautiful. We only stayed one night in December. Would go back and would recommend it to anyone.

Strontian is a pleasant village overlooking Loch Sunart with a small secondary school, post office and a few shops where you can buy everyday necessities as well as tourist gifts. The Bothy Bar (part of the Strontian Hotel) serves good food and dogs are allowed. It is a good base for exploring the Ardnamurchan peninsula (including the famous lighthouse) although the single-track roads beyond Strontian can be challenging even to experienced drivers!

Strontian is well situated to explore glens, lochs, magical coastal places, superb woods, and the fine Ardnamurchan peninsula. The weather was a bit mixed during our three full days, but you are never stuck for places to visit. The Benview Phoenix is located at the foot of a very fine “Kirk and coffin” route, and worth a walk on its own. Polloch and Loch Doilet are only a short, though exciting, drive away.

Strontian is a quiet community at the head of Loch Sunart. It's an ideal location for enjoying complete relaxation in outstanding scenery. We stayed at Kilcamb Lodge and had dinner there most evenings (exceptional!). We also had lunch at The Salen Inn (lovely!), just a short drive away. We took a wonderful half-day boat trip from Salen and were lucky enough to see masses of wildlife. We drove, then walked to some wonderful white-sand beaches.

Stunning scenery and surrounded by peaceful nature. Mountains that can glow pink at dusk, eagles soar overhead. Stunning beaches nearby. A wild and well kept secret of a place. Dinner at Kilcamb hotel brasserie was fantastic. Stay at Heatherbank Guesthouse was perfect.

Well provided village given its size.

Well provided village given its size. For hillwalking all the local peaks are accessible but only two wholly on foot. The others need a car or an overnight and some of the minor roads are challenging in such a remote location.

Graham! We loved Graham…he was a fabulous host. Very friendly and welcoming with a huge sense of humour. He even made the dogs a doggie breakfast in the morning! The setting was wonderful- very peaceful and remote. The food was lovely. The bar was unlicensed, but that was fine, we’d brought our own. A friendly hotel. Not pristine, but the welcome far outweighed that.

Great B&B in the middle of the hills above Strontian. The area around is beautiful and quiet. Paul was a great host and made us directly feel at home. He helped us with ideas to visit around. The house is beautifully equipped. Breakfast was delicious with various choice of conventional and vegetarian options.
