We arrived after reception had closed but a named envelope containing our room key and clear instructions for finding our room and breakfast times written on it. We had a lovely, warm, light-filled and quiet room with expansive views over the city. As it was a rainy evening and we were tired from a long journey, we were very glad to be able to use the lovely Indian restaurant on the lower ground floor. There was a great choice of dishes for breakfast the next morning. I’d happily stay here again.

The property was so comfortable and so very close to the centre of Durham. The standout for us was the excellent service of the staff. Every staff member we encountered went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. They were so positive welcoming and responsive. We even received a Christmas stocking with sweet treats on our door on Christmas morning . Thank you Delta Hotels Marriott Durham Royal county for making our family Christmas in Durham so special and lovely.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked and paid for through booking.com had shut down. So this was a very stressful start to our stay. We had to find and pay for alternative accommodation out of town as all hotels were booked. Now I cannot get through to anyone from booking.com to get a refund as their help centre is hopeless

Durham city has some obvious highlights like the cathedral, but we preferred the more intimate National Trust Crook Hall Garden near the city centre. Park and Ride buses essential, don't bring a car in. Beamish Open Air Museum is half an hour north. We spent 7 hours there and still missed lots of it. Tickets are expensive for one day but cover 12 months so we'll be back. Shildon Locomotion Museum (NRM) is great for railway fans. Bleak high villages to the west then open moorland we didn't have time to explore. Remnants of England's industrial history everywhere if you look for them.

Cathedral and Castle including the exhibitions were great. An active town centre with lots of interesting shops. As a university town it has plenty and varied hospitality outlets. We were only there for two days but will definitely be back.

Durham is a friendly and beautiful city. The cathedral and castle are stand out attractions. There are many attractive walks to take through the cobbled streets and along the river banks. There are also plenty of good restaurants, pubs and tea and coffee shops for those looking for refreshments.

Some in my party complained about the hills - it's hilly!

Some in my party complained about the hills - it's hilly! Enjoy the views that brings! Large pedestrianised areas make walking round the centre shops and alleyways a pleasure. The castle and cathedral peninsular is great for the majestic church and leafy walks by the river, but the castle is student accommodation, not tourist site, so enjoy the sight of it, but usually only from outside. The city has the buzz a student population bring.
