Gateway to the peak district and all that, yes, but Chesterfield has a lot to offer in its own right. Ive been before, I was here for work this time but I had time to root around. Come on a thursday when the flea market is on and make a long weekend of it. Look out for the fantastic Record Fairs, and two of the best independent record shops you could hope for. There are some great old pubs and The Spreadeagle is an excellent place to stay and eat. Do your homework, but turn up on spec and explore. You'll enjoy it. We spent a week at the Spread Eagle with the intention of it being our anchor for the Peak District. I would do it all over again, hands down. Chesterfield itself was a nice enough town but it wasn’t our focus so didn’t really think much about it. Lovely Park with walks, cafe, playground and a great little train for the Kids and the Young at Heart. Nice little town with national retail and independant shops. St Mary's Church is nice to visit too. There are two Wetherspoons and several Costa's/Caffè Nero's plus independently owned eating places too. This hotel is perfect if you want amazing food in a lovely location. It is quite central to a lot of walking trails, also some amazing walks from the hotel. Unfortunately we didn't see much of the town apart from a visit to Morrisons for basics/fuel and a visit to a take away Chinese that only took cash.
