Even though I have a long ancestral history in Bridport and visited many times as a child, I had never been to Axminster. The only thing I knew about it was the carpet manufacturing. I therefore assumed it was rather 'industrial'. However, it is anything but and is absolutely charming. Axminster also has a beautiful station that could be straight out of 'Brief Encounter'. I didn't even know that its name derives from the river Ax and therefore it is the 'minster' town of the Ax river; which leads to the equally charming Axmouth. This latter town even has a tram. There is not much going on in Axminster.

Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon.
Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon. I chose to arrive by train and found it very easy to get to places on the train or bus. However, be aware that some of the local buses do not operate after 18:00. This really took me by surprise. Taxis are also limited. So, although the bus service at the train station provides some ideal areas for further exploration, always check that you can get back!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Chose Axminster as most of the accommodation nearer the coast was fully booked, however, it is only 15 minutes drive into Lyme Regis or you can get the bus instead. Only a small place but there was a Tesco, Post Office and a small market on Thursday mornings.
