To be honest, Valence is an ugly city.

This was a forced stop but I didn't see anything that was worth visiting. It is just a small working town and the hotel we stayed in was a dump. Even taxi driver couldn't believe we would stay there. Nothing to see.

We loved the proximity of the hotel to the old part of town.
We loved the proximity of the hotel to the old part of town. There was convenient parking which led 1) to Penny Kenny's Irish pub (v. friendly) which was across from a magnificent city park, complete with a grand gazebo; then 2) loads of beautiful shops; then 3) many sweet little narrow streets with cafés, atmosphere of genuine conviviality and terrace drinking. Valence is a lovely place to come and stay for a few days or a few weeks. The town has lots of great restaurants and the cafe scene is quite good. I did find the number of SDF people so homeless quite alarming. They were harmless but there were a lot. As soon as it gets dark, they don't seem to hang around. Valence is a great staging point for the Vercors mountains and as a stay over into the Ardeche. We come to Valence regularly and really like it. There are some great little artisan places particularly along the Rue Des Alpes just going out of town. It lies close to the motorway - autovia - and the car parking is fenced. Nice and helpful staff. Nice breakfast. Clean and comfortable rooms, even though I have only tested one of the rooms.
