Lovely area.
Lovely area. Don't miss the Underground River tour at La Bouiche, and the Grotte du Mas d'Azil was amazing though the tour was only in French and you do not get to see the paintings. Pity the Museum opens at 4.30pm and we did not have enough time to visit it.Guest review byJosephMalta - 10.0
Foix is really lovely.
Foix is really lovely. Packed full of great restaurants, most of which are very reasonably priced. It's also quite small so you can walk to pretty much wherever you want to visit and it's very very French, so chock full of charm. There's a Farmer's market on Friday in the morning at which you can buy the most delicious food and drink for very sensible prices. Foix is a charming French town, a bit shabby, with a large castle towering above it. We didn't make it to the castle bc we went to Cacasonne instead. We ate a a good restaurant called Guarana in the town. They have more modern dishes, but be prepared for cheese! A quiet, commuter sort of city.
A quiet, commuter sort of city. During our stay, the castle and the trail to the terrases overlooking the city were unfortunately closed, and likely will be well through 2024. This area would be much better to explore with a car to access the parks and farther out points. In the center of the city of Foix there is a famous medieval castle, which is currently being renovated. Next to it there is a nice museum. Surrounding ancient part of the city is very pleasant. There are a lot of small shops and places to eat. There is a trail up to a nearby plateau with an excellent view of the castle and the city of Foix and of surrounding area. A charming city with many interesting old buildings some of which have been renovated and some of which need renovation. It is well-provided with restaurants; we had good food in Le Vertigo and the Bar Auberge Miranda. The room is big enough with everything needed in it on the ground floor so it was very convenient with the luggage to go straight into the room. A very good shower, the room had facilities for making coffee and tea, a TV, a very rich and varied breakfast. The hosts did an excellent job in providing a gluten-free and lactose-free breakfast for my partner and explaining how to turn on the electric hob (we use gas at home!). The small kitchen area had everything needed to create a simple gourmet dinner with the excellent produce available in the excellent variety of shops in Foix.
