Paraty is surrounded by emerald green forests attached to mountains that plummet directly into turquoise waters or white-sand beaches. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses of the city centre pay homage to its Portuguese roots, and accessible islands and secluded beaches lure the sun-seeking crowds.
White buildings decorated with colourful door arches and window surrounds line the small lanes of the historic old town. The 17th-century First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies watches over the shaded eastern meeting point of Matriz Square.
North of the canal are Pontal and Jabaquara beaches that are split by the Perpetual Defender fortress, built by the British in the 18th century. Hiring a boat will take you out to more remote islands like diving hot spot Ilha dos Meros or unspoilt Paraty-Mirim Beach, south of the city.

It's an absolutely gorgeous place. There are many beautiful beaches, but the crown jewel is the sea, where you can find dozens of wonderful islands and beaches reached only by boat, so this is a mandatory tour.
